Just a reminder that LOTS will be held November 4-6 in Bismarck at The Best Western Doublwood Inn.  We are very excited about bringing in Matt Booth to train with us on Friday November 4th.  Matt Booth is an internationally known speaker, trainer, and coach!  As an Outstanding Young Iowan and Rising Star Award winner he entertains people, educates minds, and impacts lives!  He is truly an amazing speaker!  I have had the opportunity of attending his training twice in my Jaycee career and am so ready to hear him again!  He truly empowers and will hold your attention throughout the entire session!!  His training is all day on Friday and will be included in your $70 LOTS/Fall convention registration fee to also include lunch on Friday.  We will be holding our Fall convention in conjunction with LOTS to include Elections and a Board of Directors meeting on Sunday!  Please register today, as we need to ensure there are enough chapters present to conduct business and make important decision regarding our State Organization!  We will be opening the training up to the public as well to raise money for the State Organization as well.  There is more information in this Roughrider that talks about Matt Booth and his training! You can also visit his website at www.mattbooth.com.  The hotel has secured a block of rooms for Thursday night as well at the same rate for the weekend.  Please feel free to email or call me if you have any questions. Dueces Wild Dueling Pianos

On October 19th the State will be having the Dueces Wild Dueling Pianos Benefit in Minot at the Grand International Inn.  Tickets are $20 pre sale or $25 at the door!  We did get enough donations so that all of the proceeds will go to the Minot flood victims.  If you have never been to one of their shows, I hear you are really missing out!  Look them up on their website at www.wildpianos.com.  Read some of the reviews!  It's guaranteed to be an AMAZING time and not to mention a great break from all the flooding that has happened in North Dakota!  I hope to see you there!

President Connie Welcomes You!

Greetings North Dakota Jaycees!

It is so hard to believe that January is over and we are in to February already!!  Time flies when you are having fun, that is for sure!!  What an AMAZING year 2010 was!  I have some pretty big shoes to fill!!

My theme this year is Recruit, Revive, Relive!  I want to Recruit new members for this amazing organization.  We all know how important membership is so please spread the word of this awesome organization and what it truly has to offer.

I want to Revive our current membership!  I think everyone gets so wrapped up in getting new members that we sometimes forget about our current members, so lets try and concentrate on them this year as well.  I will be sending out a survey in the next month or so to get some thoughts and ideas for training and for what our members really want!

With recruiting new members and reviving our current members, I'm hoping that we can Relive the North Dakota Junior Chamber!  I want our Organization to grow and I want everyone to be PROUD TO BE A JAYCEE!  I don't know about you, but I'm proud and feel honored to be a Jaycee!  Our Organization offers so much to everyone!  We work hard and we have fun!!!  We help people and make differences in peoples lives!

I have a project that I would love see happen in North Dakota!  I have been talking to a few people and everyone seems really excited about it.  It's the Holiday Rest Stop!  I think we can do this as a State Project!  We need to pick the busiest highway and set up at a busy Rest Stop during a busy holiday!!!  We would offer hot dogs, donuts, snacks, coffee, sodas, etc.  Just have something to offer the drivers so they can take a break, especially if they are or have been driving a long time.  This was a huge success in Texas.  We would get letters in the mail thanking us for having that because they didn't have to money to buy food, or that they were really tired and needed to rest.  It's thanks like that, that make this project so rewarding!!  We would set up on a Friday evening and man the rest stop 24/7.  until Sunday or Monday evening.  I say Monday, because in Texas we called it Labor Day Rest Stop because the was the busiest traveled weekend.

I have also included the State Parade in this edition of the Rough Rider.  You will see that I have made a few changes.  One is for Roadrunner points.  I have changed it to 5 points per person that travels.  I think it is important to travel to other chapters, especially those brand new chapters to give them the support that is needed.  I'm also including State Officers (except me as President) to be able to get points for their local chapters if they travel!  It really is a lot of fun traveling to other chapters across the state and help them with their projects!  I also included points for the OPS Manual.  We will be sending those out this month and every member will get their own copy!  With that, I have added 10 points per manual for each person that is fully registered and in attendance at the Sunday morning board meeting at State Conventions.  These will be working manuals and we will make updates to them throughout the year!  Thanks to the Foundation for offering to pay for for every member to have their own!!  Everything else on the Parade is pretty much the same, so please read it and see how you can get points for your Chapters!

I am honored and very excited to be serving you as your 77th State President!  I am excited to see what 2011 has in store for our State!  Please let me know how I can help you!  As always, thank you so much for your hard work and dedication to our Organization!  I look forwarding to working with each and every one of you!

In Jaycee Spirit!

What the Jaycees do

The U.S. Junior Chamber founder Henry Giessenbier’s vision of providing young people with leadership through community service can be broken down into four Areas of Opportunity: Business, Individual, Community, and International.

Business: embodying the line of the Jaycee Creed, which states “Economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise,” this area provides an opportunity for individual members to contribute to the development and enhancement of the economic infrastructure, prosperity, and well-being for their community as well as all nations.

Individual: embodying the line of the Jaycee Creed which states “Earth’s great treasure lies in human personality,” this area provides an opportunity for individual members to realize their personal potential through training programs.

Community: embodying the line of the Jaycee Creed which states “Service to humanity is the best work of life,” this area develops the sensitivity of individual members to societal problems and community dynamics by providing experience in community problem solving.

International: embodying the line of the Jaycee Creed which states “That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations,” this area provides an opportunity for individual members to contribute to the development of goodwill, understanding, and cooperation among all peoples

About us

Henry “Hy” Giessenbier visualized an organization that would allow young men to develop their business skills and reputations in the community. In his era, most young men were out of school and working by the age of 15. Their first jobs were most likely the jobs they held throughout their lives. With luck and hard work, some might reach executive positions by their forties. Giessenbier felt that young men were not receiving the opportunities necessary to develop their skills at a younger age, thus depriving our nation of an important resource, and so he formed the founding ideals of the U.S. Junior Chamber.

The Junior Chamber organization is: “a constructive action organization of young persons who devote a portion of their time to community service in the public interest, developing young persons as leaders in their communities.” (Taken from The U.S. Junior Chamber Bylaws Manual.)

The purpose of the Junior Chamber is: “to promote and foster the growth and development of young persons’ civic organizations in the United States, designed to inculcate (to teach and impress upon) in the individual membership of such organization a spirit of genuine Americanism and civic interest, and...to provide them with opportunity for personal development and achievement and an avenue for intelligent participation...in the affairs of the community, state, and nation, and to develop true friendship and understanding among young persons of all nations.” (Taken from The U.S. Junior Chamber Bylaws Manual.)

Simply put, the purpose of the local chapter is to become a force for good in the community, determining community needs and providing solutions by planning and facilitating community service projects. In the act of serving, members receive hands-on experience, which translates to the enhancement of personal growth and the development of valuable leadership skills. This is the total Junior Chamber Concept.
